MANY people spend their lifetime struggling to overcome negative thoughts that come up constantly.
Despite combating the bad feeling daily, many find that it surfaces off and on and affects their focus, actions, and over time it impedes their growth and well-being.
My column this week was spurred by two e-mails sent to me by readers from Penang and Perak about how lousy they feel daily because they are overwhelmed by unpleasant thoughts.
Kevin Yap from Ipoh and R. Shalani from Butterworth requested for tips on how to overcome such unfavourable thoughts which affect them adversely.
Their thoughts ranged from safety of their children when they are in school or at work, suspicions about the people they meet, having feelings that something bad is going to happen all the time and they often viewed things negatively.
Negative occurrences are normal owing to the environment we live in and such messages should be viewed positively, meaning that the thought requires attention.
Individuals should never feel hopeless in such a situation because these are learning processes of life and, in most cases, such influences are self-created.
To a great extent, all thoughts are developed by the individuals themselves and sometimes also owing to outside influence.
In most cases, we see negativity in others, which is actually a reflection of ourselves.
Such an attitude has a two-way effect – it not only makes you miserable but you also make others feel gloomy.
It is important that you have a positive outlook on life so that you have happy thoughts and you attract positive things.
This is because carrying negative thoughts is harmful as it can affect your health and your relationship with others.
There are many simple methods and techniques that can help individuals to get out of such situation and among them are to watch a funny movie or to spend time telling jokes with children and friends.
One powerful gesture, which I find can turn negativity to a pleasant reflection, is to smile – which is contagious, as it spreads the positive energies to all present in that environment.
Having an optimistic attitude towards people and things is like magic – you will see all actions and interactions falling into place as planned because it creates a cheerful mood.
Although it can be challenging to keep ourselves away from negative things, we still can carry a constructive attitude by focusing on the good things in life.
Here it is vital that we are in the company of people who are positive thinkers because their presence not only brings cheer but will also motivate you to move forward.
We should treat all troubles as experiences in life and even in the most painful moments we should focus on the good things in life so that we are above the depression situation.
Developing a healthy attitude does not bring harm but creates happy vibrations to overcome problems.
When faced with negative thoughts, replace them with positive ones and think about what you want and not what you don’t want.
Also be careful what you think because your mental process can decide your day.
Starting the day with positive affirmations is another strong way to ward off negative thoughts.
It is recommended that all individuals should focus on something that inspires his or her state of mind daily and maintain the thought process to create the desired results.
At the end of the day, success lies in our hands in the way we view and carry out our duties.
Keep trying and don’t give up.
